2. The Door to Hell, Turkmenistan

This spectacular sight is also true to its name. Visually, at least. This deep and everlasting hell hole, bang in the middle of a gas field in the small town of Durweze, has been burning for over 50 years! Apparently, it was created in 1971 by Soviet engineers, who were drilling the field when the ground collapsed – the result being a 69-metre-wide, 30-metre-deep crater. In a bid to prevent it leaking gas, they set light to it and voila! A fantastic tourist attraction.
