The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American film written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The film brings an optimistic view of life telling the story of a banker Andrew “Andy” Dufresne (Robbins) who receives the death penalty in Shawshank State Penitentiary for murdering his wife and her lover, despite claiming he was innocent. During the following decades, he befriends another inmate, the contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding (Freeman), and takes part in a money laundering operation directed by the prison warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore all appear in supporting roles. Although The Shawshank Redemption received a warm reception among critics after its release, especially for its story and the acting of the main protagonists, it was a box office disappointment, taking in only 16 million dollars during its launch.
