The movie set for “Waterworld” (1995), directed by Kevin Reynolds and starring Kevin Costner, was one of the most ambitious and expensive ever constructed at the time. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic future where the polar ice caps have melted, covering the Earth in water and leaving only scattered patches of land. To bring this watery world to life, the production team constructed a massive floating set in the ocean off the coast of Hawaii. The set, known as the Atoll, served as the main setting for much of the film and was built on a large platform supported by pontoons. It featured various structures including a central tower, huts, walkways, and docks. In addition to the Atoll set, “Waterworld” also featured several other elaborate sets, including the interior of the Mariner’s trimaran, the Deacon’s makeshift fortress, and the Smokers’ oil tanker. These sets were constructed on land and on large barges towed out to sea, allowing for filming in a controlled environment. The production of “Waterworld” faced numerous challenges, including inclement weather, logistical difficulties, and cost overruns. However, the ambitious sets and practical effects helped to create a visually stunning and immersive world that captured the imagination of audiences.
