The movie set for James Cameron’s “Avatar” (2009) was a combination of practical sets and extensive CGI environments. For example, a large portion of the set was dedicated to motion capture stages where actors performed their roles while wearing motion capture suits. Additionally, there were physical sets constructed for certain scenes, such as the human-operated bases on Pandora and the inside of the Avatar link chambers. These sets were designed to provide a realistic environment for the actors to interact with, even though the surroundings would later be digitally replaced or enhanced in post-production. Overall, while “Avatar” relied heavily on CGI to create its visually stunning world, there were still significant practical elements involved in the production process, including physical sets and motion capture stages.
