16 – The Matrix – 1999

The Matrix is a sci-fi film written and directed by the Wachowski sisters and starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving. It was premiered in the United States on 9th July 1999. It’s the first release by the Matrix franchise, which has continued to release a series of videogames, short animation films and comics. The film, awarded four Oscars (Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects) has become a cult film. The storyline creates parallels with certain religious, philosophical and ideological concepts. It is also a before and after in the visual effects at the time. For example, thanks to its use of ‘bullet time’, a technique which makes it appear as if the action has frozen whilst the camera continues to move around the scene.
