Cobra Lily

Scientific name: Darlingtonia californica.
Darlingtonia californica, also known as the cobra lily or California pitcher plant, is a distinctive carnivorous plant native to boggy, nutrient-poor habitats in Northern California and Oregon. Its unique appearance, resembling a striking green and red serpent rising from the ground, is characterized by tubular, hooded leaves with translucent “windows” that allow light to enter the pitchers. These specialized leaves act as traps, luring insects with nectar and an attractive scent. Once inside, downward-pointing hairs prevent prey from escaping while they become disoriented by the translucent light, ultimately falling into the digestive fluid at the base of the pitcher.
