Iran

Formerly Persia, Iran is a country located in Western Asia. The country has breathtaking scenery and numerous World Heritage Sites, making it one of Asia’s hidden tourist treasures. It is also home to one of the oldest civilisations in the world, which began with the formation of the old kingdom of Elam in 2800 BC. Decades of war, a strident anti-West African stance, the random arresting of people and a strict rule requiring all women, including foreigners, to wear head coverings, has resulted in a lower number of tourists visiting the country. Although tourism experienced a significant decline during the war with Iraq, it has subsequently recovered, and the country boasts the highest percentage of domestic tourism in the world.
