7. The Ships of Moynaq, Uzbekistan
Share
Out in the middle of the desert, in a town called Moynaq, there’s a load of rusty old fishing boats waiting to be discovered. Unlike in the previous landmark, these boats weren’t plonked there in the hope of attracting tourism. Rather, they are the result of a man-made disaster in which the Soviet decision to divert the rivers feeding the Aral Sea caused it to evaporate and recede. This had at one time been a bustling fishing port!
