11 – Galileo Galilei

Born in Pisa, Italy, in the year of 1564, Galileo Galilei was one of the most influential men of the 17th century. The great scientist studied a medical degree at the University of Pisa, however he did not finish it because he was interested in mathematics. Known for his groundbreaking work in the areas of astronomy, physics, mathematics, he also invented the telescope, the compass and the thermometer, tools that are still important and mostly used in everyday life.
