10. Boll Weevil Monument, Alabama

Bugs just don’t get enough credit these days. Back in 1919, however, the boll weevil had this entire stature dedicated to it. The reason? In the early twentieth century, boll weevils chomped through all of the town of Enterprise’s cotton crops. It wasn’t well received at first, but it forced farmers to look into other types of farming and they came up with peanuts – actual peanuts – which proved to be extremely lucrative! Thus, thank you, boll weevils.
