Cleopatra

The movie set for “Cleopatra” (1963), directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, was one of the most extravagant and expensive sets ever constructed for a film at the time. The film was primarily shot in Rome, Italy, where extensive sets were built on the backlot of Cinecittà Studios. These sets included massive structures such as the Sphinx, the Temple of Isis, and Cleopatra’s palace. The set for Cleopatra’s palace, in particular, was a sprawling complex with multiple rooms, courtyards, and gardens. It was designed to evoke the luxurious lifestyle of the Egyptian queen and served as the backdrop for many of the film’s key scenes. Despite its massive budget and extensive sets, “Cleopatra” faced numerous challenges during production, including delays, cost overruns, and on-set conflicts. However, the film remains a classic example of Hollywood’s golden age, known for its grandiose sets, elaborate costumes, and star-studded cast.
