Formerly Ceylon, Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia. Sri Lanka’s geographic location and deep harbours have made it of great strategic importance, from the earliest days of the ancient Silk Road trade route to today’s so-named maritime Silk Road. Visitors looking to escape the tropical climate of the coast can enjoy cool temperatures in the hills, while marvelling at the endless fields of green in which the tea plantations are found, as well as forested peaks in some parts of the country which offer pleasant trekking trails. Endless beaches, a diverse culture, surfing and delicious food make Sri Lanka a very irresistible destination indeed.
